Outsourcing or Not?

Sunday November 16, 2008

In this economy, outsourcing may be the last thing on your mind. But, let's give it another look. As a small business owner, you want to spend time on your core competencies. You want to focus on what generates profits or creates your competitive advantages. The key to outsourcing is this issue. Could a job your firm currently does be done less expensively by someone else? Quite a question, isn't it? If the answer is yes, and if outsourcing that job could give you more time to spend on your core competencies and those things that make your business special and profitable, then it is time to consider outsourcing. Think about the possible jobs within your firm that could fall in this category. Make a list. Get price quotes from outsourcers. Compare those price quotes to what it costs you to do that job. Make some decisions. You may find some cost-cutting opportunities that morph into opportunities for you to spend time on what makes your business special!

With the advent of sites offering online home-based work, outsourcing has become less expensive than it was before. Sites like oDesk, eLance and guru.com have given small business owners the privilege of hiring professionals at a lower rate.
