A recent article discusses the best places to start a small business in this time of economic downturn. Interestingly, nine out of the top ten metropolitan areas were in the south and west with the remaining one in the northeast. The top two cities are in North Carolina, Raleigh and Charlotte. The western cities rounding out the top five are Austin, TX, Seattle, WA, and Boise, ID.
It's interesting to read the article and look at the statistics that make each city a candidate for a good place to start a small business. Those statistics, if you replicate them or research them for your own city, can help you decide the prospects for starting a small business in your city. Check out the article!

I would think low tax, non union, warm areas and ready access to clients/customers would be the most likely areas. Here in South Florida for example, healthcare is very strong due to the number of retirees in the population. But there’s also a world class infrastructure and access to 3 international ports, the only adjacent port/airport in the US and a telecommunications hub that connect North and South America.
